One of the first types of work many people think of when looking to make good use of their typing skills is data entry. It seems like an obvious choice, it's relatively straight forward and uncomplicated work and it is something that you could do from home.

So what exactly is a data entry job? The whole idea behind this type of work is that data needs to be entered onto a computer system. A vast majority of this type of work takes place offline. In the UK there are specialist direct mailing companies that handle this sort of data transfer requirement. A typical scenario would be entering information from postal surveys or telephone message systems onto a computer to be processed. Data processing happens after the data has been entered onto the system.
With a decent typing speed and a high level of accuracy you could probably get job doing this type of work in your home town. You are however probably looking for a job you can do from home rather than have to travel to a place of work every day.
There seems to be more demand for part time data entry jobs from home where as off line jobs tend to be full time. Part time data entry jobs do exist but you do have to be careful about which companies or sites that you approach. There are many sites that claim to be able to offer you this type of work but they often ask for some sort of payment up front. I'd recommend you stay away from these sorts of offer as most will be scams intent only on extorting money from you.
Some of the scenarios you may come across include sites offering to sell or give you access to a list of companies that may hire you. These are often just a list of sites that have no particular intention of hiring you or anybody at that particular time. You may as well just pick a few data entry companies names out of your local directory.
Another common scenario is where you think you are being offered a job. They of course ask you for a fee. The so called job then turns out to be just a guide on how you can post ads all over the internet or pay for ads on Google in order to try and sell digital products to other people. Not really data entry at all and these types of ad are very misleading. Please do not get taken in by their flashy sites and bogus claims. This is not to say you couldn't make money doing this but you would need much more insight and knowledge into this area. These are no the types of job you are looking for.
So now you are aware of the sorts of thing that you should be avoiding. I hope this section has at least acted as some sort of primer to at least warn you of the potential ways you could be ripped off. A simple rule to stick to, if you are looking for a job do not hand over your money. If you were starting your own business or becoming self employed or a freelancer then you may well need to make some initial investment. Getting a job, even an online job should not cost you anything.
There are a couple of routes you can go down to find data work. I would stick to the so called free data entry jobs that allow you to work from home. Those are the ones that do not require you to pay out any money.
Your first port of call should be the recruitment sites. There are quite a few on the internet, some better than others. You may find however that a lot of the ads do not get vetted so beware of scammers masquerading as legitimate data entry opportunities.
There are a few specialist recruitment sites are better at vetting the job offers they get and have dedicated sections for home workers wanting to work from home. I have listed some sites that I have found to be quite useful.
You should treat any work from home typing job as if you were applying for a real world job. The legitimate job listings are going to be for real companies requiring a real job application, a curriculum vitae and an interview. Interviews are usually conducted by phone. Most employers prefer to be able to talk to their potential employees as they will probably never get to meet you in real life.
Searching and applying for a data entry job is going to take a while. In the mean time if you want to start earning some part time money using your typing skills I recommend that you try paid surveys. It doesn't cost anything to join and you can start earning straight away.
The way it works is simple. Once you join you will be invited to take part in surveys, panels, questionnaires and product testing and reviews. You will basically giving your opinion on different products, services and issues. The better you are at typing the more work you can get through.
You will get paid for the surveys that you complete. There area number of these types of site on the internet and I have tried quite a few. There are currently only two companies that I have found to be any good. You can try them out by clicking here and here. It doesn't cost you anything to join and will give you a chance to earn some extra money whilst polishing up your data entry typing skills.
