How To Effectively Work From Home And Balance Looking After Your Children

If you have never done any sort of typing jobs from home and you have children then you will want to be able to maximise your productivity in what you may describe as a challenging work environment. This may sound counter intuitive but you may end up being more productive with the little ones around who are also demanding your attention.

I am not going to lie working from home with young children is difficult but it is not impossible. The trick is to be able to work in small bursts and get as much work done as possible when you are in your work phase. You will find that after a while you will easily be able to switch from parent mode to work mode and back again without losing track of what you are doing. This should be easy for most women but may be challenging for work from home dads (I'm partially joking as women tend to be able to multitask much better than men).

Getting 4 hours work done in 1 hour

When you know you have limited time to get work done your mind tends to be very focussed. If you gave someone 4 hours to do a job they would probably take 4 hours to do it. They would find every excuse under the sun to not get the work done and distract themselves with the most trivial of tasks. If you only have an hour to do the same amount of work you will learn to avoid the trivial distractions and get the job done.

Have all your work applications open on your screen

So here are a few tips that will help you to be more productive whilst you work. Your computer is going to be your work tool so you need to make sure that you use it effectively. You don't want to be using part of your work hour waiting for things to load or stuff to happen. To maximise your productivity make sure that you have all of the applications open that you will be using. Have your email program open, your internet browser open with all the sites in separate tabs relating to your work. Have your word processing software and work planning spreadsheet open.

Leave your computer on all the time

working from home effectively and juggling childcareIt may seem strange to some to leave your computer on all of the time. However many people do this already and if you have a relatively modern computer it will not make that much difference to the amount of electricity your computer consumes compared to shutting it down. On your computer if you click on the start button then the control panel you will be able to get access to the power options. In the power options you can set your computer to go into standby mode after a set amount of minutes. I set mine to 3 minutes. Using this feature if you do stop using your keyboard or mouse for the set amount of time the computer will go into standby mode.

Standby mode is like the computer being shut down except that it can remember what you were doing. To switch the computer back on again just press the power button on the front of the computer, the one you would usually press in order to switch the computer on. Depending on the speed of your computer after several seconds the computer will back on and you can just continue working from where you left off. This will save a lot of time not having to open every single program and document that you need open to be able to continue working. At the end of your working day you can then shut down your computer as normal.

For any work from home typing job this method will save you many hours over your work week. It will not only save you time reopening everything on your screen but will also prevent your little ones from causing havoc by touching the keyboard or mouse if you should happen to leave the computer unattended.
