Proofreading Jobs You Can Do From Home

Have you ever considered proofreading as a way to earn some money working from home? It may not be a job you have even heard of let alone one that you have considered. For those of you who are not really sure what a proofreading job entails we will cover the basic job requirements.

There will always be proofreading jobs and many of them these days are advertised online as the documents to be proofread are digital so can easily be emailed. The job description covers a wide range of variations on the basic premise that is you check written documents. Depending on the employer and the type of documents you would be checking will depend on what they want you to do. These do however tend to be some of the more skilled work from home typing jobs available on the internet. Some you will be able to do without experience where as other you may need specialist skills and qualifications.

At the most basic level you will just correct spelling, grammatical errors and formatting errors. Hold on doesn't Word check for spelling mistakes? Yes, whilst software does a great job it will not spot everything and even with a document having been spellchecked and grammar checked by Word it can still have glaring errors.

proofreading jobsIn addition to the basic checking they may require you to edit the document. This could mean replacing a line that doesn't quite read right or replacing words that are more appropriate. On from this they may require you to edit the document to make is more suitable for the target audience. For example the vocabulary of a retired person would be different to that of a teenager.

There is also specialist advanced proof reading requirements that will pay much more than a basic proof reader. You may be required to Copyscape check a document for originality, SEO optimise the document for keyword density or give the document a sales copyrighting overhaul.

Many documents are translated from other languages into English. However not all these translations read correctly for an English speaking audience and generally sound awkward. You may have already read such documents on the internet where you can tell it was written by someone with English as a second language. You may be required to proofread and correct the errors and flow so the document so it reads as more natural English.

Where to find a proofreading job

You have three avenues that you can pursue in order to find a job as a proof reader. You can apply directly to an employer looking for an online proof reader. You can solicit freelance work or you can go through an agency that acts as a middleman between you and the employer.

Applying directly for home proofreading jobs

The best places to find home based proofreading jobs are via the online job listing sites. If you browse through the data entry jobs from home page I have listed some specialist job listing sites that advertise jobs that you can specifically do from home. As will all ways any online work is recommended it will never cost you anything to apply and you should never pay any money when looking for a job. You will need to search through the listings for proofreading jobs and apply directly to the companies much like applying for jobs in the job section of your local newspaper.

Finding freelance proofreading jobs

I have mentioned before about freelancing when talking about typing from home jobs that you can do. There are several well established freelancing sites on the internet. If you have never heard of freelancing before it is essentially a way to work for other people finding them via an online marketplace. It is a good way to quickly get started however you will be competing with others for the work much like when you apply for a job vacancy.

Going to a proofreading agency

There are agencies online that can find you proofreading work. An agency works much like a high street job agency except you are allocated work that can be done from home and the work is usually on an adhoc basis. This works much like freelancing in that you will get lots of small jobs from lots of different employers. The difference with an agency is that unlike freelancing you do not deal directly with the employer and only deal with the agency.
