Over the last few years there has been a rapid growth in the virtual assistant market. A VA is someone who provides office type services to small business people and the self employed.
A landscape gardener may spend all is time gardening and does not have the time or effective skills to do the paperwork required to run his business. It would not be cost effective for him to hire a full time office person, besides he doesn't have an office. Instead he turns to a virtual assistant who may be located on the other side of the country to do the paperwork for him. Of course everything is computerised these days so he emails or calls when work needs doing.
So as a virtual assistant your client may call you on his mobile whilst on a job and ask you to type up a few quotes for him and then post them off. So you enter the details into the computer, print off the quotes and post them. It works well for the landscaper as he can concentrate on what he does best and you can effectively work from home.
The reason this sort of service is becoming so popular is that more and more people are running small businesses in the UK, around 40,000 new start ups a year. These small business people need to keep their costs down to remain competitive. Hiring a VA means they do not have office costs or the expenses associated with hiring someone full time. They can just pay a VA for the work they need doing.
For you becoming a virtual assistant means that you are able to remain at home and be able to work for a variety of clients doing interesting and varied work for a decent wage. As you build up a solid client base you will be much more financially secure that you would be working for one company plus you do not have the restrictiveness and stress of doing a 9 to 5 job.
As this is now an established and growing industry there are several routes to starting this type of career. There are many online agencies that deal exclusively in this industry matching people like you who work from home with businesses requiring assistants. There are also many associations that you can talk to and join if you are interested in getting into this line of work.
